May 2019 Food Trends

Inspiration | 30th April 2019

Deirdre Moriarty is the Musgrave MarketPlace trends expert. Below she discusses the May 2019 food trends that have caught her eye.

I’m just back from a great trip to Oman. It was a first time visit for me, and it’s always interesting to experience a new food culture. I got to try some amazing street food, breads, dates and cheeses, the list goes on (and on!). So the trend focus this month is on health as it is front of mind after a very indulgent trip. This month we look at a flexitarian approach to eating and its impact, how keeping a food diary can help you stay on track with your health goals and if you want to take a break from your healthy eating check out some of the upcoming food markets and festivals on this summer.

Have a great month!

Deirdre

A flexitarian approach to eating, what are the impacts?

The term flexitarian has been bandied around over the last few years, but what does it really mean, and can it help to end global food poverty? To me, a flexitarian is someone who eats a little bit of everything, but mainly focuses on a plant-based diet. A new report from the East Lancet commission which brings together 30 leading scientists on food, health and the planet has indicated that a flexitarian approach could be the key to ending global food poverty. The report asserts that focusing the bulk of our diet on fruit, veg, wholegrains and lentils with smaller amounts of fish, meat and eggs would help drive sustainable food production and healthier diets.

Dear diary…

If you do want to adapt a more flexitarian approach to your diet than food journaling could be the thing for you. The Journal of Obesity has indicated that spending just 15 minutes per day logging your food intake can help you to lead a healthier lifestyle. This self-monitoring approach yielded successful results for trial participants, and I’m going to put it on my to do list!

Spring into a Summer of food festivals and events

There is lots going on in this space over the next few months. There are some fantastic food festivals on, including The Moira Food Tour, Bushmills Salmon & Whiskey Festival, Belfast Gin Festival, Belfast Craft Beer Festival, Hillsborough Castle & Gardens Food Festival to name but a few. If you can, go along to some of these great events, you will see the best of Irish food and drink and it’s a great way to spend a lazy weekend.

This month I’ll be

Keeping a food diary!
Visiting some of the great food markets around the country.
